Curriculum

Programme Structure

The programme is structured in 5 modules, listed below in order of study.

01

Fundamentals of route optimisation, local mobility and operational efficiency on short paths

  • Short-distance route concept and differences between urban distribution, local transport, port mobility, tourist routes and proximity services
  • Key variables: distance, time, cost, traffic, consumption, capacity, time windows, stops and availability of resources
  • Relationship between route planning, punctuality, customer satisfaction, productivity and reduction of operating costs
  • Types of operations: local deliveries, pickups, excursions, transfers, technical services, last mile distribution and short sea routes
  • Poor planning risks: delays, redundant journeys, low occupancy, over-cost, fatigue and loss of service quality
02

Data, Operational Planning and Demand Analysis on Local Routes

  • Collection of data from origin, destination, stops, duration, frequency, schedules, demand, capacity and available resources
  • Identification of demand patterns by day, season, zone, customer, service, time slot and type of operation
  • Restrictions Classification: Delivery windows, Accesses, Forbidden Zones, Traffic, Meteorology, Loading, Rest and Service Priority
  • Preparation of maps, distance matrix, estimated times, points of interest and critical zones
  • Prioritization of routes according to urgency, profitability, volume, safety, quality of service and energy efficiency
03

Optimisation methods, stop sequencing and efficient route design

  • Basic principles of optimisation: distance reduction, time reduction, stop grouping and efficient use of resources
  • Sequencing of stops, circular routes, linear routes, routes by zones and routes with return to base
  • Allocation of vehicles, boats, drivers, crews, technical resources and available capacity
  • Management of time windows, service times, waits, access restrictions and customer priorities
  • Adjustment of routes to traffic, weather, cancellations, delays, breakdowns, new requests or changes in demand
04

Digital tools, geolocation, tracking and automation of routes

  • Use of digital maps, GPS, planning applications, spreadsheets, light TMS and tracking platforms
  • Address geocoding, zone creation, bookmarks, checkpoints, and estimated time calculation
  • Real-time tracking, equipment communication, service test, incident logging and status update
  • Route automation through rules, priorities, alerts, templates, calendars and operational reports
  • Integration with reservations, orders, CRM, inventory, customer support and billing systems
05

Applied short-distance route optimisation project

  • Case definition: local cast, short sea excursion, port route, technical service, tourist transfer, last mile or proximity operation
  • Diagnosis of demand, stops, resources, restrictions, times, costs, incidents and opportunities for improvement
  • Design of optimised routes with sequence of stops, allocation of resources, time windows and operational alternatives
  • Preparation of the digital system of monitoring, communication, registration of incidents, indicators and reports
  • Development of the cost control plan, sustainability, quality of service, periodic review and continuous improvement
