Types of Calls for Research Proposals

  • Aimed at undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma students at NMI.
  • Duration: 3 to 12 months, depending on the project’s complexity.
    Areas: Efficient propulsion, renewable energy in vessels, marine robotics, maritime safety.
  • Benefits: Expert supervision, access to laboratories and simulators, publication of results on NMI’s academic portal.
  • For internal and external researchers, promoting projects with high scientific and technological impact.
  • Duration: 6 to 24 months, with six-monthly monitoring.
  • Incentives: Partial or full funding, access to advanced laboratories, participation in international conferences, and the possibility of patenting innovations.
  • Joint projects with universities, government institutions, and companies in the naval sector worldwide.
    Duration: 12 to 36 months.
  • Priority areas: Sustainability, artificial intelligence applied to navigation, smart vessel design, advanced port management.

Timetable and Application Process for Calls for Research Proposals

  • Annual calls: Open in January each year, applications close in March, selection and resource allocation in April.

  • International calls: Two rounds: January–June and July–December.

  • Technological innovation calls: Launch in February, prototype review in August, awards in October.

Application process:

  1. Registration on NMI’s academic portal.
  2. Submission of a detailed research proposal (objectives, methodology, impact).
  3. Evaluation by an academic committee and international experts.
  4. Acceptance notification and allocation of resources.
  5. Six-monthly progress reviews and personalised mentoring.
  6. Presentation of final results and potential international publication.
