- Personal Protective Equipment: Selection, use, and maintenance of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for specific tasks.
- Materials Handling: Learn safe techniques for handling, storing, and transporting materials used in naval construction and repair.
- First Aid: Basic first aid training to respond effectively to emergencies in the workshop.
- Prepare for a safe and productive naval work environment by minimizing risks and maximizing efficiency.
Programme Structure
The programme is structured in 5 modules, listed below in order of study.
Fundamentals of Naval Workshop, Space Organisation and Preventive Culture
- Concept of naval workshop and differences between maintenance workshop, repair, naval carpentry, composites, mechanics and electricity
- Main areas: Workbench, Cutting area, Welding, Sanding, Painting, Storage, Machinery and waste
- General Hazards: Cuts, Strikes, Entrapments, Falls, Projections, Noise, Dust, Electricity, Fire and Chemicals
- Relationship between order, cleanliness, signage, workflow, productivity and safety of personnel
- Technician, supervisor, apprentice, supplier and visitor responsibilities within the naval workshop
Manual, electrical and pneumatic tools in naval work
- Hand tools: wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, files, saws, swamps, squares and measuring tools
- Power Tools - Drills, Grinders, Sanders, Jumpers, Saws, Polishers, Milling Machines and Multitools
- Pneumatic tools: pistols, sanders, riveters, blowers, impact wrenches and compressed air systems
- Selection of tools according to material, task, precision, power, ergonomics, risk and work environment
- Pre-inspection, maintenance, storage, change of accessories and removal of defective tools
Safety in cutting, sanding, drilling, welding and composite work
- Hazards in cutting, roughing, drilling, threading, polishing and machining of wood, metal, fibreglass and technical plastics
- Welding safety, hot work, sparks, fumes, screens, ventilation, fire extinguishers and work permits
- Control of sanding powder, fibres, metal particles, resins, solvents, paints and flammable products
- Use of jaws, sergeants, benches, supports, guides, machine protections and exclusion zones
- Prevention of fires, burns, inhalation, projections, trapping and cross-contamination of materials
Protective equipment, ergonomics, cargo handling and injury prevention
- Personal protective equipment: glasses, gloves, hearing protection, masks, respirators, screens, shoes and work clothes
- Selection of the PPE according to chemical, mechanical, thermal, electrical, acoustic, respiratory and projection risks
- Bench ergonomics, forced postures, repetitive work, tight spaces, heavy tools and physical fatigue
- Manual handling of loads, hoisting of parts, use of cars, hoists, cranes, trestles and safe supports
- Prevention of musculoskeletal injuries, cuts, burns, bumps, falls and prolonged exposure to noise or vibration
Applied project of tools and safety in naval workshops
- Case definition: repair shop, composites, carpentry, mechanics, electricity, painting or maintenance of boats
