Programme Structure
The programme is structured in 5 modules, listed below in order of study.
Fundamentals of lighting, shipped electronics and electrical safety in boats
- Concept of on-board lighting and electronics systems and differences between functional lighting, navigation, comfort, signage and auxiliary electronic equipment
- Main components: lights, switches, panels, batteries, fuses, wiring, sensors, displays, chargers and control modules
- Types of lighting: Indoor, outdoor, navigation lights, courtesy lights, technical lighting, emergency and ambient
- Peculiarities of the marine environment: humidity, salinity, vibration, corrosion, condensation, movement and sun exposure
- Frequent risks: short circuits, overloads, connection failures, interference, excessive consumption, fire and loss of visibility
Nautical lighting, luminaire selection, consumption and installation criteria
- LED, halogen, fluorescent, watertight, recessed, surface, adjustable, and low-consumption luminaires
- Navigation lights, anchoring, reach, side, stop, deck, bathtub, engine room and work areas
- Basic calculation of consumption, power, autonomy, efficiency, colour temperature, intensity and light distribution
- Location of luminaires according to visibility, glare, safety, aesthetics, accessibility and protection against water
- Wiring, fuses, switches, regulators, dimmers, watertight connectors and corrosion protection
Basic electronics on board, auxiliary equipment and control systems
- Common electronic equipment: GPS, probe, VHF radio, AIS, autopilot, sensors, alarms, cameras and monitors
- Control panels, relays, switches, data buses, electronic modules, multifunction displays and distribution systems
- Level, Temperature, Smoke, Gas, Flood, Battery, Pressure, Movement and Opening Sensors
- Integration of USB chargers, 12 V sockets, small inverters, battery monitors and communication devices
- Organisation of electronic circuits to avoid interference, voltage drops, overloads and failures due to humidity
Installation, wiring, electrical protection and fault diagnosis
- Selection of marine cables, sections, colours, terminals, pipes, labels and safe plot criteria
- Connections, crimping, heat shrink, watertight boxes, quick connectors, terminals, busbars and masses
- Protection by fuses, circuit breakers, disconnectors, relays, protection against inversion of polarity and overcurrent
- Basic use of the multimeter to measure voltage, continuity, polarity, consumption, voltage drop and circuit status
- Fault diagnosis: lights that do not turn on, flashing, phantom consumption, blown fuses, corrosion and false contacts
Applied project of lighting and electronics on board
- Case definition: sailboat, boat, small yacht, catamaran, tourist boat, cabin, deck or electronic auxiliary system
- Diagnostics of the existing system with lighting, consumption, wiring, batteries, protections, sensors, faults and needs of use
- Design of the lighting and electronics scheme with luminaires, equipment, circuits, fuses, switches and control points
