Curriculum

Programme Structure

The programme is structured in 5 modules, listed below in order of study.

01

Maritime drone fundamentals, coastal air operation and applications in the naval environment

  • Concept of drone use in maritime environments and differences against land, urban and industrial operations
  • Types of drones applicable to the maritime environment: multirotor, fixed wing, VTOL, waterproof drones and specialised systems
  • Applications in inspection of boats, ports, coasts, surveillance, salvage, fishing, tourism, cartography and environmental monitoring
  • Conditions of the maritime environment: wind, humidity, salinity, reflections, waves, corrosion, interference and loss of visual references
  • Operational Hazards: Falling into the water, loss of signal, navigation errors, batteries affected by weather and operation near people or boats
02

Equipment, sensors, configuration and technical preparation for maritime operations

  • Drone selection according to autonomy, wind resistance, camera, sensors, range, stability and resilience
  • RGB, thermal, multi-spectral, zoom, positioning sensors and payloads applied to maritime missions
  • Equipment protection against salinity, humidity, sand, rain, shock, condensation and corrosion
  • Flight configuration, calibration, firmware update, Propellers review, batteries, sensors and remote control
  • Battery planning, cards, spare parts, take-off zone, landing zone and emergency procedures
03

Mission Planning, Maritime Weather and Operational Safety

  • Flight area evaluation: Coast, port, boat, bay, beach, cliff, canal, anchorage or offshore facility
  • Basic maritime meteorology reading: wind, gusts, visibility, rain, fog, temperature, humidity and state of the sea
  • Planning of routes, heights, distances, points of interest, solar orientation and safe operation windows
  • Operation from coast, dock, boat, deck or platform with criteria of stability and safety
  • Emergency management: signal loss, automatic return, low battery, forced landing, falling to water and GPS failure
04

Image capture, video, inspection and technical documentation with drone drones

  • Techniques of aerial photography and video on sea, coast, ships, ports, routes, beaches and maritime structures
  • Exposure control, reflections, horizon, movement, composition, framing and stability in scenes with water
  • Visual inspection of hulls, decks, masts, cranes, dikes, docks, buoys, lighthouses, emissaries and coastal structures
  • Documentation of manoeuvres, nautical events, port operations, maritime tourism and conservation activities
  • Basic, orthomosaic photogrammetry, 3D models and change tracking on beaches, coasts or infrastructure
05

Applied project for the use of drones in maritime environments

  • Definition of the case study: naval inspection, coastal monitoring, tourist content, surveillance, rescue, port or environmental project
  • Mission planning with objectives, equipment, sensors, permits, meteorology, risks, routes and security procedures
  • Simulated or actual flight execution with checklist, data capture, incident management, and operational logging
  • Processing of images or videos to generate visual report, audiovisual piece, orthomosaic, inspection or technical product
  • Evaluation of results, limitations, risks detected, maintenance of the equipment and recommendations for improvement
