Curriculum

Programme Structure

The programme is structured in 5 modules, listed below in order of study.

01

Clinical Foundations, Initial Assessment and Prioritization in Advanced First Aid

  • General Principles of Advanced First Aid: Assistance Objectives, Limitations of Action and Comprehensive Chain of Survival
  • Systematic Primary Assessment: Scene Security, General Patient Impression, and ABCDE Sequence in Critical Environments
  • Clinical prioritisation and initial triage: identification of vital threats and classification of patients according to severity and available resources
  • Vital Signs, Basic Monitoring and Rapid Neurological Assessment: Awareness, Breathing, Perfusion and Pupillary Response
  • Decision making under care pressure: immediate intervention criteria, stabilisation and activation of advanced healthcare support
02

Immediate life support, advanced airway management and initial care of critical patients

  • Early recognition of cardiorespiratory arrest and operational activation of the resuscitation protocol
  • Initial advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation: high quality compressions, effective ventilation and coordinated use of the DEA/defibrillator
  • Advanced airway management: opening, aspiration, cannulas, supraglottic devices and urgent permeabilization criteria
  • Oxygen therapy, assisted ventilation and initial respiratory support in patients with acute respiratory failure
  • Approach to the unconscious patient and acute neurological involvement: glycaemia, seizures, trauma and reversible causes
03

Advanced control of hemorrhages, shock, severe trauma and stabilisation of the polytraumatized patient

  • Identification and control of massive hemorrhages: direct compression, hemostatic bandages, tourniquets and control of complex bleeding
  • Recognition of shock and its main forms: hypovolemic, distributive, cardiogenic and obstructive in initial pre-hospital care
  • Initial management of head trauma, thoracic and abdominal trauma: warning signs, care limitations and prioritisation of transfer
  • Immobilization and stabilisation of the traumatized patient: spine, limbs, pelvis and safe mobilization with rescue devices
  • Attention to open fractures, traumatic amputations, crushing and soft tissue injuries of high complexity
04

Time-dependent medical emergencies, special patient and advanced management of critical clinical situations

  • Initial care of acute coronary syndrome, chest pain and potentially lethal cardiovascular disorders
  • Recognition and early management of stroke, focal neurological deficit and cerebrovascular emergency in out-of-hospital context
  • Advanced management of anaphylaxis, severe allergic reactions and rapidly progressing respiratory compromise
  • Approach to diabetic seizures, metabolic alterations, seizures and disorders of the level of consciousness of medical cause
  • Pediatric, geriatric and pregnant patient care in urgent situations: physiological particularities and intervention criteria
05

Clinical simulation, integrated scenarios and final action project in advanced first aid

  • Design and resolution of simulated clinical scenarios with multiple care variables and real-time decision making
  • Operational integration of valuation, life support, hemorrhage control and urgent medical care in complex cases
  • Simulation of incidents with multiple victims: triage, prioritisation, resource coordination and sequential stabilisation
  • Evaluation of technical and non-technical performance: response times, quality of care, communication and patient safety
  • Preparation of an applied protocol of advanced first aid for a specific professional, institutional or community environment
