Curriculum

Programme Structure

The programme is structured in 5 modules, listed below in order of study.

01

Fundamentals of fast prototyping, device development and iterative design methodologies for early validation of solutions

  • Rapid prototyping concept and its function in the development of physical, electronic, mechanical and functional devices
  • Differences between idea, concept, mockup, functional prototype, validation prototype and pre-industrial version of the device
  • Principles of iterative design: trial, error, continuous improvement and reduction of technical and use uncertainty
  • Stages of the development of a device from the initial need to the preliminary validation of its operation
  • Rapid prototyping, innovation, reduction of development costs and acceleration of time to market
02

Conceptual design, initial modelling and definition of functional requirements for prototype devices

  • Identification of the problem or need that will give rise to the device and formulation of clear functional objectives
  • Definition of technical, dimensional, ergonomic, operational and interaction requirements of the device to be developed
  • Techniques of ideation and generation of concepts applied to the design of devices for technical, industrial, medical or consumer use
  • Sketching, schematization and initial representation of solutions to display architecture, components and expected operation
  • Introduction to basic digital modelling of parts and assemblies to prepare the device towards physical prototyping phases
03

Rapid prototyping technologies, materials and tools for the manufacture of functional and semi-functional devices

  • Principal fast prototyping technologies: 3D printing, laser cutting, light CNC, modular electronics and assisted manual manufacturing
  • Selection of materials for prototypes: plastics, resins, light metals, foams, compounds, technical cardboard and hybrid materials
  • Workshop and labouratory tools for assembly and adjustment of devices: cutting, joining, drilling, welding and fixing
  • Integration of mechanical, electrical and electronic components in prototypes of devices with different levels of complexity
  • Precision, resistance, manufacturing speed and cost criteria in the choice of prototyping method
04

Construction, assembly and commissioning of the prototype with focus on functionality, adjustment and initial evaluation

  • Preparation of the prototype manufacturing process: part planning, assembly sequence and control of necessary resources
  • Manufacture of device components using fast techniques and criteria for dimensional control and basic repeatability
  • Structural and functional assembly of the prototype: joints, alignments, module integration and stability of the assembly
  • Initial start-up of the device and verification of basic operation of integrated mechanical, electrical or electronic systems
  • Identification of design errors, interferences, structural weaknesses and operating problems during the first tests
05

Capstone Project for design, manufacture and validation of a fast device prototype for a real or simulated application

  • Definition of the case study: problem to be solved, type of device, target user and main function of the prototype
  • Development of the concept and specification of requirements: functionality, dimensions, materials, interaction and validation criteria
  • Preliminary design and modelling of the device: general architecture, parts, components and rapid manufacturing strategy
  • Manufacture and assembly of the prototype: technology selection, functional integration and basic quality control of the result
  • Test execution and analysis of device performance: operation, necessary adjustments and opportunities for iterative improvement
